The Dark Side of India’s Startup Ecosystem: Red Tapism, Fake Agencies & The Costly Illusion of Seed Funding & Grants
India is proudly marching ahead as a “Startup Nation,” boasting over 1 lakh registered startups and the third-largest startup ecosystem in the world. From Shark Tank pitches to Startup India accolades, the buzz is loud. But behind this glamorous curtain lies an ugly, festering truth—a system riddled with red tapism, fake promises, and silent exploitation.
And it’s not just a minor glitch. It’s a cancer that’s killing the dreams of first-time entrepreneurs.
The Scam Nobody Talks About: Pay First, Get Nothing Later
Hundreds, if not thousands, of so-called “consultants,” “startup mentors,” and “grant filing experts” are openly selling a dangerous dream:
🚨 “Get ₹50 lakh non-refundable grant in 10 minutes.”
🚨 “Pay just ₹1 lakh for guaranteed seed funding.”
🚨 “We have connections in govt incubation centres.”
If you’re a first-time founder, fresh out of college or bootstrapping from your savings, these offers seem like golden tickets. What you don’t realize is that many of these agencies don’t even know the actual process of applying for a grant—let alone getting one.
Worse, they take your money upfront—often ₹50,000 to ₹1,00,000—for “formatting,” “proposal creation,” or “internal approvals” and then disappear or ghost you with excuses for months.
Many entrepreneurs have lost lakhs—not on building a product, not on marketing—but on fake promises of funding.
Red Tapism in Government-Backed Incubation Centers
Now let’s talk about the incubation centers themselves.
Not all, but many government-approved incubation centers and startup accelerators have become dens of nepotism, red tape, and gatekeeping.
Here’s how it usually works:
- You walk in with a solid idea.
- They nod politely, ask you to “submit via the official portal.”
- Then, they onboard their own people for seed funds and grants.
- You? You wait for months, get no updates, and eventually give up.
It’s no secret anymore: grants and seed funds are being funneled to those with “connections” inside the system—friends, relatives, or previous batch mates of the ones running the show.
And some incubators even charge ₹25,000–₹75,000 upfront just to “consider” your application.
Yes, you read that right. You now have to pay to even be considered for a grant that was meant to support you.
Gujarat: The Hotbed of “Grant in 10 Mins” Scams
One state that has recently seen a mushrooming of such scams is Gujarat. Ironically, a state known for its business spirit is now filled with “startup consultants” who lure entrepreneurs with:
- “50 lakh grant in 10 minutes”
- “100% non-repayable startup funding”
- “Govt-certified documentation services”
Food startups, textile startups, sustainable brands—you name it, they’ve all been targeted.
These fake firms place flashy Google Ads, run Instagram campaigns, and even host webinars—all designed to trap naive founders.
Some of them even flaunt fake “MoUs” or screenshots of “approval letters” and testimonials from people who are either imaginary or paid.
The Emotional and Financial Toll on Founders
Imagine pouring your heart into a product idea. You believe this one grant could help you scale. You borrow money or spend your savings to pay these consultants.
And then—nothing.
You’re ghosted. Emails go unanswered. Calls are redirected. WhatsApp chats are left on blue ticks.
And your dream? Crushed.
The startup ecosystem is not failing because of a lack of ideas or talent—it’s failing because honest entrepreneurs are too busy getting cheated to focus on building.
Where’s the Accountability?
The Government of India talks about “Ease of Doing Business.” But where is the system to vet these agencies?
Where’s the watchdog for incubators misusing public funds?
Where’s the platform where cheated entrepreneurs can raise a flag?
For a country that claims to be the next Silicon Valley, we have no grievance redressal mechanism for grant scams. No database of blacklisted agencies. No transparency on how grants are disbursed.
Even on Shark Tank India Season 4, the absurdity of the so-called “grant culture” didn’t go unnoticed. Time and again, founders walked in and casually dropped lines like, “We’ve already raised ₹50 lakhs in grants,” or “We got ₹20 lakhs from a government scheme.” This prompted Anupam Mittal, the founder of Shaadi.com, to sarcastically quip, “Aap log seed funding aur grants kahan se laa rahe ho, humein bhi batao na!” It wasn’t just humor—it was a jab at the opaque, connection-driven grant mafia operating behind the scenes. The fact that even seasoned investors are left wondering about these mysterious funding sources says everything. Clearly, there’s a parallel ecosystem of “exclusive access” incubators and grant-peddling agents that only a privileged few seem to know about—while the rest are left filling forms, paying fake consultants, and praying for callbacks that never come.
That’s the real tragedy.
A Word of Caution to First-Time Entrepreneurs
If you’re starting up in India, read this carefully:
🚫 Never pay any agency upfront for filing government grants or seed fund applications.
🚫 Grants are NOT awarded in 10 minutes. The real process takes weeks or months and involves official portals.
🚫 Check if the agency or incubator is actually registered with Startup India or DPIIT. Verify everything.
🚫 Talk to other entrepreneurs who have received real grants. Ask how they did it. Learn the truth.
And remember: Real support doesn’t come with a price tag before delivery.
Time to Speak Up
It’s time we raise our voice.
It’s time we name and shame these frauds.
It’s time we create awareness before more dreams are killed by this toxic ecosystem.
Let’s build a startup culture where merit, transparency, and ethics win—not connections, bribes, and middlemen.
