Charles Njonjo: A Life of Law, Discipline, and Distinction
Charles Mugane Njonjo (1920–2022) was a prominent Kenyan lawyer and statesman. He served as Kenya’s first post-independence Attorney General from 1963 to 1979. Later, he became the Minister for Constitutional Affairs and was a Member of Parliament for Kikuyu Constituency from 1980 to 1983.
Born into a prominent family, his father Josiah Njonjo was a colonial paramount chief. Charles studied at the University of Fort Hare in South Africa and later at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom. He was called to the Bar at Gray’s Inn in 1952.
Dietary Habits: A Blend of Simplicity and Indulgence
Charles Njonjo attributed his long life to discipline and healthy habits. His daily meals were simple. He usually had tea and toast for breakfast and preferred meals rich in fruits and vegetables. He mostly avoided red meat like nyama choma (grilled meat) and chose white meats such as fish instead.
However, he did indulge in special treats. As he turned 101, his son-in-law revealed that he enjoyed slow-cooked goat meat, honey, and a bottle of Tusker Light beer. Goat yoghurt was also among his favorite desserts.
Daily Routine: A Commitment to Fitness and Focus
Even at an advanced age, Njonjo maintained a regular exercise routine. He swam daily, gradually reducing his laps from 12 to 7. He also cycled and used a treadmill for about 10 minutes every day.
He started his mornings early, often reading newspapers by 6 a.m. He continued to visit his office daily and expressed his desire to work as long as he was physically able.
Personal Life: The Duke of Kabeteshire
Charles Njonjo got married in 1972 at the age of 52 to Margaret Bryson. The couple had three children. He was famous for his elegant sense of fashion, often seen wearing custom-tailored pinstripe suits from London. This stylish appearance earned him the nickname “The Duke of Kabeteshire.”
His disciplined life, selective indulgences, and dedication to physical activity contributed to his long life. Charles Njonjo passed away on January 2, 2022, just a few weeks before his 102nd birthday.
