Different Flags, Same Game: The Invisible Nexus of Indian Politics

Why corruption cases in Indian politics rarely see justice — regardless of who’s in power

In the world’s largest democracy, the ballot decides who rules. But when it comes to accountability, it seems every party protects its own — even if the flags differ. The real war isn’t always between Congress, BJP, or TMC or any other party; it’s often a war against the people, and a silent alliance to cover each other’s tracks.

Let’s unravel the political hypocrisy hiding in plain sight.

⚖️ The LAVLIN Case: Pinarayi Vijayan’s Decades-Old Shadow

One of the most infamous and long-dragged cases is the SNC-Lavalin case involving Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan — a powerful leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

📌 What is the SNC-Lavalin Case?

  • Year of incident: Between 1995–1998
  • Nature: Alleged corruption in awarding a contract to Canadian company SNC-Lavalin for renovating three hydroelectric projects in Kerala.
  • Allegation: A ₹375 crore deal was signed during Pinarayi’s tenure as Electricity Minister. It allegedly resulted in a loss of ₹86 crore to the exchequer due to criminal conspiracy and misappropriation.
  • CBI chargesheet: Filed in 2009, naming Pinarayi Vijayan as the 7th accused.
  • Current Status: In 2024, no significant hearings or verdicts have taken place. The case remains in limbo.

Even after BJP came to power at the Centre in 2014, the CBI, which directly reports to the Union Home Ministry (under Amit Shah), has not aggressively pursued the case. Despite fiery speeches during elections, there has been zero political or legal pressure from the BJP to push the case forward.

🧩 Nexus Pattern: Cases That Never See the End

The pattern is visible across states, parties, and decades. Below are just a few high-profile cases that expose this invisible alliance:

1. Suresh Kalmadi – Congress (CWG Scam)

  • Case: Corruption in awarding contracts for 2010 Commonwealth Games.
  • Arrested: 2011
  • Status: Out on bail, case dragging on in trial court.
  • No political pressure from BJP after coming to power in 2014 to fast-track it.

2. Lalu Prasad Yadav – RJD (Fodder Scam)

  • Convicted in multiple cases but still actively influencing Bihar politics through his family.
  • Gets repeated parole, bail, and medical exemptions despite serious charges.
  • Despite BJP being in Bihar alliances, there’s no consistent push to block RJD’s influence.

3. Robert Vadra – Congress (Land Deal Cases)

  • Several land deals under ED/CBI scanner since 2014.
  • Despite Modi government’s claims of “zero tolerance for corruption”, no chargesheet, no conviction, and no arrest.
  • Multiple raids, media hype, but no closure.

4. Sharad Pawar – NCP (Maharashtra Sugar Scam)

  • Alleged ₹20,000 crore scam in cooperative sugar factories.
  • Inquiry started but never reached prosecution stage.
  • Despite BJP being in power in Maharashtra multiple times, no real political or judicial movement.

5. B.S. Yediyurappa – BJP (Land Denotification Scam)

  • Accused of irregularities and nepotism during his CM term.
  • CBI case closed citing lack of evidence.
  • Rewarded with CM post again later — while others from opposition parties still face “pending inquiries”.

🧠 So What’s Going On?

Despite media theatrics, raids, and court notices, most political corruption cases in India reach a comfortable stalemate. The reason?

The Unofficial Code:

  • Today it’s your minister, tomorrow it may be mine.
  • No party wants to set a precedent of jailing powerful politicians — because the same sword could hang over them someday.

The Tools Used:

  • CBI, ED, IT Department: Used more as tools of pressure than instruments of justice.
  • Delays and Transfers: Key cases transferred repeatedly between courts, officers changed, witnesses vanish.
  • Bail culture: Arrests, if any, are short-lived. Everyone is back in action before elections.

🔥 Election Speeches vs. Post-Election Silence

During elections, leaders roar against corruption. Post-election? A blanket of silence.

  • Modi and Shah attack Pinarayi in rallies, but allow the SNC-Lavalin case to rot.
  • Congress blames BJP for cronyism, but never pushes for Vadra’s accountability when in power.
  • Regional leaders are used as bargaining chips during alliances, not as criminals to be prosecuted.

There are several countries that have taken strong, real actions against corrupt politicians, setting a powerful precedent. While no country is perfect, some stand out for their firm stance on political accountability, transparency, and anti-corruption laws.

Some are listed below.

🇰🇷 South Korea: No One Above the Law

🔥 Strongest Example:

  • Former President Park Geun-hye (2013–2017)
    • Impeached in 2017.
    • Found guilty of bribery, coercion, and abuse of power.
    • Sentenced to 24 years in prison (later reduced, but still served jail time).

🧨 Also:

  • Ex-President Lee Myung-bak (2008–2013) was also jailed for 17 years for corruption and embezzlement.

✅ Why it works:

  • Independent prosecution.
  • Public support for legal action.
  • Judiciary not afraid of political backlash.

🇮🇹 Italy: Operation “Clean Hands” (Mani Pulite)

🚨 What happened?

  • 1990s anti-corruption operation that exposed deep-rooted political corruption.
  • Over 5,000 politicians and businessmen investigated.
  • Led to the collapse of many political parties including the long-ruling Christian Democrats.

✅ Impact:

  • Entire power structure was shaken.
  • Public faith in justice system increased.
  • Politicians now think twice before getting involved in obvious corruption.

🇷🇴 Romania: The Anti-Corruption Crusade

🚔 National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA):

  • Set up in 2002.
  • Under Laura Codruța Kövesi, the DNA prosecuted:
    • Thousands of politicians, including ex-prime ministers, MPs, and mayors.
    • Conviction rates reached 90% at one point.

🔥 Major Convictions:

  • Former Prime Minister Adrian Năstase jailed for corruption in 2012.
  • Dozens of MPs and ministers jailed or forced to resign.

🇸🇬 Singapore: Zero Tolerance Culture

👨‍⚖️ Example of strictness:

  • Even a minister accused of misusing a car for personal errands can lose their post.
  • Salaries of public officials are high to discourage bribery.
  • Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) is independent and feared by all.

✅ Result:

  • Singapore is consistently ranked among the least corrupt countries.
  • Even minor infractions are taken seriously.

🇨🇱 Chile: Punishing the Elite

🔍 Notable Example:

  • In 2015, the president’s son and daughter-in-law were indicted for influence-peddling.
  • Politicians across all major parties have faced investigation and charges.
  • Judiciary is empowered and independent, and public pressure keeps cases alive.

So What Can India Learn?

Country Key Learning
South Korea Even Presidents can go to jail. No political immunity.
Italy Mass clean-up operations can shake up systemic corruption.
Romania Independent, empowered agencies with no fear of politicians.
Singapore Create a culture of integrity and fear of real consequences.
Chile Take action even when the accused is family of the President.

🔁 What India Needs to Implement:

  1. True independence of CBI, ED, and IT Dept — away from political control.
  2. Fast-track courts for political corruption cases with mandatory timelines.
  3. Transparent public case tracking platforms for all criminal charges on politicians.
  4. Lifetime disqualification from elections upon conviction.
  5. Citizen oversight bodies to audit politician finances.

India has the democracy, the legal framework, and the public support.

What’s missing is the political will and systemic accountability.

Until politicians fear jail more than they fear losing elections, corruption will remain just another campaign promise.

👁️ Conclusion: A Democracy of Deals, Not Justice

This is not just politics. It’s a well-oiled machine of mutual blackmail and selective outrage.

The public sees red and green and saffron — but behind the curtains, it’s all shades of grey.

The real fight in India is not BJP vs Congress or CPI(M) vs BJP or BJP vs TMC.

It is people vs the political class.

And until voters demand justice beyond election drama — not through noise, but through independent judiciary reforms, fast-track courts, and complete separation of investigation agencies from political control — the nexus will stay intact.

And so will the corruption.
