Ethanol Story: Farmers Cheated, Big People Earn, America Smiles
When the government started the ethanol program, they told us three big things:
👉 Farmers will get more money.
👉 India will buy less petrol from outside.
👉 We will become self-reliant.
But now the truth is coming out. India is planning to buy corn from America to make ethanol. And this corn is not even normal corn — it is genetically modified (GM), which India has always avoided.
So what was said to reduce imports is now becoming a reason for new imports. And the farmer, who was supposed to benefit, is once again the loser.
Who Earned from Ethanol?
It is not the farmer. It is some big families close to power.
- Union Minister Nitin Gadkari is in the middle of this storm.
- His two sons, Nikhil Gadkari and Sarang Gadkari, are connected to ethanol companies like Cian Agro Industries and Manas Agro Industries.
- Look at the numbers: Cian Agro’s business went from about ₹18 crore in June 2024 to around ₹523 crore in June 2025.
- Its share price also jumped more than 20 times in just eight months.
- The opposition has asked for an inquiry. Gadkari says he has done nothing wrong.
Still, everyone can see: while farmers wait for fair prices, these companies made unbelievable profits.
Why Buying U.S. Corn Is Dangerous
- India grows enough corn. We even used to export it. With better planning, our own farmers can supply ethanol.
- American corn is mostly GM. Allowing it can spoil our soil, seeds, and farming system.
- Farmers will get hit. Cheap corn from America will drop the price of Indian corn. Farmers will not get fair money.
- Dependence on U.S. If we start depending on them for corn, they will control our fuel supply in the future.
Is Ethanol Mixed Petrol Safe for Vehicles?
Ethanol-blended petrol is safe for most vehicles, but only up to a limit. In India, petrol is now mixed with up to 10% ethanol (E10), which works fine in almost all cars and bikes. The government is planning to move to 20% ethanol (E20) soon. But here is the catch: old vehicles may face problems like engine wear, rust in fuel tanks, and lower mileage if they use higher ethanol blends. Newer vehicles launched after 2023 are being made “E20-ready,” but millions of older vehicles on Indian roads are not. So while ethanol may reduce oil imports and pollution, for many vehicle owners it may bring repair bills and engine issues.
America’s Pressure on India
This is not only about corn. America is putting pressure in many ways:
- They raised H1B visa fees to make it tough for Indian IT workers.
- They put very high taxes on Indian goods, up to 50% in some cases.
- They keep asking India to open markets for their dairy, medicine, and farm products.
This is not friendship. This is pressure.
The Truth
Ethanol was promised as a lifeline for farmers. But today it looks like a tool for making a few people rich and for allowing America to enter our market.
Final Word
India does not need U.S. corn.
India needs:
✅ Honest policies.
✅ Farmers getting fair prices.
✅ Leaders who think about the nation first.
Otherwise, “self-reliance” will remain only a slogan, while our future is sold litre by litre.
🔥 This is the plain truth: Ethanol was supposed to help the farmer. Instead, it helped the powerful.
