India Must Deal With the United States on Equal Terms — Not Blind Obedience

India and the United States share an important strategic partnership. Trade, technology, defense cooperation, and geopolitical coordination have strengthened ties between the two countries over the last two decades. However, a partnership should never become blind obedience. A nation of 1.4 billion people and one of the world’s largest economies must always make decisions based on its own national interest, not on external pressure or approval.

In global politics, every major power acts primarily to protect its own interests. The United States does it. China does it. Russia does it. European nations do it. Therefore, India must also follow the same principle. Respect in international relations does not come from pleasing powerful countries; it comes from clarity, confidence, and consistency in protecting national priorities.

Energy policy is one of the clearest examples. India imports nearly 85% of its crude oil, and stable, affordable energy is essential for economic growth and for controlling inflation that affects millions of citizens. If purchasing oil from a particular country helps maintain energy security and economic stability, the decision should be taken based on India’s requirements, not geopolitical pressure or political narratives from abroad.

History also offers an important lesson. Countries that depend too much on one global power often lose their strategic independence over time. India has traditionally followed the policy of strategic autonomy, maintaining relations with multiple global powers while preserving the freedom to take independent decisions. This balanced approach has allowed India to navigate global conflicts and tensions without becoming a tool in someone else’s geopolitical strategy.

Recently, a White House spokesperson referred to India as a “good actor” while discussing India’s oil trade with Russia and the broader sanctions environment. The comment appeared to suggest that India had behaved in line with expectations from Western countries. While diplomatic language often uses such terms, India must be careful about how such statements are interpreted. A responsible response should make it clear that India’s decisions are driven by its own national interest and energy security, not by the approval or expectations of any external power.

The United States remains an important partner for India in areas such as technology, defense cooperation, and innovation. But strong partnerships are built on mutual respect and equality, not on approval-seeking. India should cooperate where interests align, negotiate firmly where they differ, and always keep its long-term national priorities at the center of its foreign policy.

Diplomacy is not about confrontation or submission. It is about confidence and balance. When India speaks with clarity about its priorities—whether on trade, energy, or global security—other nations listen.

As India grows into a major global power, its foreign policy must reflect that confidence. Cooperation with the United States is valuable, but respectful partnership, not obedience, should define the relationship.

In international politics, one rule always stands true: nations respect those who respect themselves. 🇮🇳
