The Ganesh Kumar Controversy: Personal Scandal, Political Pressure, and Questions of Power

Kerala politics recently witnessed yet another controversy involving Transport Minister K. B. Ganesh Kumar, a senior leader of Kerala Congress (B) and a key ally of the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) government. What started as a personal dispute inside his family quickly turned into a political issue, raising questions about police response, political pressure, and possible favoritism in government-linked contracts.

Ganesh Kumar is a well-known political figure in Kerala. He is a multiple-term MLA from Pathanapuram and the son of veteran politician R. Balakrishna Pillai, who was one of the influential leaders in Kerala politics for decades. Before becoming a full-time politician, Ganesh Kumar was also a popular Malayalam film actor and television personality.

His personal life has been controversial earlier as well.

Ganesh Kumar’s first wife was Dr. Yamini Thankachi, a public health researcher associated with health research institutions in Kerala. The couple married in 1994 and they have two sons together. However, their marriage later collapsed amid serious allegations of domestic conflict and personal disputes. The conflict became highly public and eventually led to a legal divorce in 2013. The controversy was so intense at the time that Ganesh Kumar had to resign from his ministerial post during that period.

Shortly after the divorce, he married Bindu Menon in 2014, who later became his second wife. Bindu Menon was known to have worked in the media and marketing sector and later became involved in business activities.

For several years the couple appeared publicly together, but the situation changed dramatically a few days ago when a major domestic dispute became public.

According to the allegations raised by Bindu Menon, she confronted Ganesh Kumar at their residence and claimed she found him in a compromising situation with another woman. She reportedly attempted to record the incident on her mobile phone. She later alleged that some people present in the house tried to prevent her from recording and attempted to take away her phone.

Feeling threatened, she reportedly contacted the police emergency service seeking help. Police officers reportedly arrived at the location but treated the matter largely as a family dispute. The incident quickly became a major political talking point in Kerala because the complaint involved a sitting minister.

Opposition leaders immediately questioned whether the police handled the situation properly and argued that the incident raised concerns about how power and influence can affect law enforcement responses.

For a brief period, there were strong political discussions that the controversy could damage Ganesh Kumar’s position in the government and possibly lead to pressure for resignation.

However, the situation took a sudden turn.

Within a short time, both Ganesh Kumar and Bindu Menon appeared publicly and stated that the issue had been resolved through discussions within the family. Reports indicated that the minister had apologized and that the couple had decided not to pursue the matter further. After this statement, the immediate political tension around the issue began to calm down.

But another controversy soon emerged.

Questions began to surface regarding business contracts linked to Bindu Menon’s company, reportedly named Midnight Sun Global. Allegations began circulating that after Ganesh Kumar became minister, the company received contracts connected to state-run cooperative organizations such as Kerafed and Milma.

The most controversial allegation involved the export of Kerafed coconut oil to Dubai, where Midnight Sun Global allegedly acted as an intermediary. There were also claims that the company received marketing-related orders connected to Milma products for overseas markets.

Critics argue that such contracts should normally go through a competitive tender process, and awarding them without open competition could raise concerns about transparency and fairness. Because the company is linked to the wife of a sitting minister, the issue has triggered debates about conflict of interest and nepotism.

Supporters of the minister, however, maintain that the contracts were legitimate business arrangements and that there is no wrongdoing.

The controversy highlights a deeper issue in politics. When personal relationships, business interests, and political power intersect, the boundary between private life and public accountability becomes blurred.

While the couple now says their personal dispute has been resolved, the political questions surrounding influence, transparency, and public trust continue to linger.

In politics, scandals may fade quickly, but the doubts they create often remain much longer.
