Khan Sir: The Teacher Who Turned Rejection into a Revolution
Faizal Khan, widely recognized as “Khan Sir,” is a distinguished Indian educator and YouTuber based in Patna, Bihar. Born in 1993 in Deoria, Uttar Pradesh, into a middle-class family, his father was a contractor, and his mother a homemaker. He completed his early education at Parmar Mission School in Bhatpar Rani, Deoria. Aspiring to serve in the Indian Army, Khan Sir joined the National Cadet Corps (NCC) during his school years and appeared for the National Defence Academy (NDA) examination. Although he cleared the written test, he was disqualified in the physical examination due to a medical condition. Undeterred, he pursued higher education at Allahabad University, earning a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) and a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree.
Khan Sir’s teaching career began modestly at a local coaching center in Patna, where he started with just a few students. His unique teaching style, characterized by humor and relatable examples, quickly resonated with students, leading to overcrowded classrooms. In 2010, he founded the Khan GS Research Centre, aiming to provide quality education to underprivileged students. Recognizing the potential of digital platforms, he launched his YouTube channel, “Khan GS Research Centre,” in 2019. The channel experienced rapid growth, amassing over 24 million subscribers and covering a wide range of subjects, including current affairs, politics, and mathematics.
Despite his rising popularity, Khan Sir remained committed to affordable education. He reportedly declined a ₹107 crore offer from a leading edtech company to keep his courses accessible, charging a nominal fee of just ₹200 per student. His dedication extends beyond teaching; he has been involved in various charitable activities, such as establishing a goshala (cow shelter) and a library in Patna.
Khan Sir’s influence has not been without controversy. In 2021, he faced criticism over a video discussing France-Pakistan relations, leading to debates on social media. In 2022, he was named in an FIR related to student protests over the Railway Recruitment Board’s NTPC examination. In December 2024, he participated in protests against changes made in the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) preliminary examination, advocating for students’ rights.
As of March 2025, Khan Sir continues to focus on his educational initiatives. While there have been speculations about his potential entry into politics, he has expressed that individual efforts alone cannot change the nation; collective societal change is necessary. His future plans include expanding his educational reach and continuing to provide affordable, quality education to students across India.
Khan Sir’s journey from a small-town educator to a national icon exemplifies resilience, dedication, and a steadfast commitment to democratizing education in India.
