Do They Respect People — or Simply Use Them?

One question we often forget to ask before trusting someone is simple:

Do they genuinely respect people, or do they only value people when they are useful to them?

A person who repeatedly cheats, betrays, manipulates, or abandons others should not be assumed to become loyal simply because you are now on their side.

A person who can cheat others can eventually cheat you too.

This is why choosing a partner—whether in business or in life—should never be based only on attraction, money, success, charm, promises, or temporary excitement.

In business, the wrong partner can destroy years of your hard work, damage your reputation, take advantage of your trust, and leave you rebuilding everything from zero.

In marriage, the consequences can be even deeper. A person who treats relationships as disposable, constantly replaces people when they become bored, or has no hesitation in betraying those closest to them may eventually treat you the same way.

Watch how someone treats the people they no longer need.

That often tells you far more about their character than how they treat the people they currently want.

If someone is willing to sacrifice their own family, betray people who trusted them, or discard long-term relationships simply because something newer or more exciting has appeared, don’t assume you will somehow be the exception.

Today, they may be telling you how terrible their previous partner was.

Tomorrow, you may become the previous partner in their story.

The same principle applies in business.

If a person has a history of cheating business partners, exploiting employees, breaking promises, or walking away when things stop benefiting them, don’t be blinded by the fact that they are currently being exceptionally nice to you.

Character is not how someone behaves when they want something from you. Character is how they behave when they no longer need anything from you.

People change, of course. Everyone deserves the opportunity to grow and become better. But genuine change is demonstrated through consistent actions over time—not through explanations, excuses, or promises.

So choose your business partners carefully.

Choose your life partner even more carefully.

Because the wrong partnership doesn’t merely cost you money.

The wrong marriage doesn’t merely cost you time.

Sometimes, the wrong person can cost you the life you spent years building.

Trust should be earned slowly.

Observe quietly.

And before giving someone a permanent place in your life or business, ask yourself:

“If one day I am no longer useful, exciting, profitable, or convenient for this person, how will they treat me?”

The answer may tell you everything you need to know.
