The Inspirational Journey of Kayammadathu Shankaran: A Textile Pioneer

His Early Years and Bold Ventures

In the early 1920s, a young man named Kayammadathu Shankaran, known affectionately as KP Shankaran, embarked on a journey that would lay the foundation for a legacy in the textile industry. Born and raised in Mangad, Kollam, Shankaran demonstrated a keen sense of ambition and a relentless work ethic from a young age. After completing his studies, he set sail for Ceylon, now known as Sri Lanka, seeking opportunities that could transform his life.

In Sri Lanka, Shankaran worked in various jobs, many related to the textile industry. His adaptability and skills, especially in tailoring, earned him a respectable income. By his twenties, armed with experience and savings, he returned to his hometown with a dream of starting his own business in textiles and tailoring.

Building a Family and a Business

Upon his return, Shankaran married his cousin Neelakandan Kalyani, fondly known as N. Kalyani. She was just 16 at the time of their marriage. Despite their love and desire to marry, KP Shankaran and his partner faced opposition from their families due to his lack of an established business or doing any job at that time. Undeterred, they defied their parents’ wishes and married anyway. Together, they began their journey as a family and entrepreneurial team. Their first child, Vimala, was born soon after.

Shankaran’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish his first shop in Moonnamkutty, Kollam, a place known locally as Third Milestone Junction. In the early 1930s, his first flagship shop stood out by offering a unique combination of textiles and gold ornaments. Shankaran not only procured textiles from wholesalers but also tailored himself ready-made clothes, providing a comprehensive shopping experience. This dual offering attracted a loyal customer base and marked the beginning of his growing business empire.

Expansion and Relocation

As his business flourished, Shankaran decided to expand and move to a new location, Mukkada, Kundara, just 10 kilometers from his birthplace. With unwavering support from his wife Kalyani, who managed their growing family of eight children, Shankaran opened a larger shop in Mukkada. His best friend and role model, Krishnaswamy, the founder of Radhas, a renowned garment shop in Kollam and many other businesses in Kollam, played a crucial role in this expansion by providing a significant amount of stock for the new shop, named Raju Textiles after Shankaran’s first son.

Raju Textiles quickly established itself as a cornerstone of the local community, known for its wide range of high-quality textiles and impeccable customer service. The success of this venture enabled Shankaran to further expand his business operations.

A Family Legacy

Shankaran’s hard work and entrepreneurial vision laid the groundwork for his children to join and help manage the family business. Each of his sons played a role in sustaining and growing the business, ensuring that Shankaran’s legacy continued to thrive. The store, Raju Textiles in Moonamkutty & Mukkada, remained a staple in Kollam, even as the family opened additional shops named Vaisali, Vaishak, and Gouri in Mukkada,Kundara.

During my school years, I also got the opportunity to live with my grandfather and my uncles in Mukkada, Kundara for nearly 5 years together from my 5th Standard to 10th Standard. I witnessed firsthand the dedication, integrity, and perseverance that defined Shankaran’s approach to business. These formative years deeply influenced me, instilling in him the values and principles that would guide my own entrepreneurial journey.
