Too Many Gods, Too Little Godliness: How India Lost Its Way in a Maze of Rituals ( Part 1 )
The Land of Faiths, but Where’s the Faith?
India has more gods per square kilometer than any other nation. We’ve built towering temples, dazzling mosques, golden gurudwaras, and serene churches. You’ll find a place of worship at every corner, incense in the air, and chants on every loudspeaker. And yet—walk a few steps outside, and you’ll find hatred, discrimination, and violence lurking just around the corner.
Why? Because we’ve become a nation obsessed with rituals, not kindness. We kneel before idols but forget to help the hungry. We donate lakhs for temple gold but ignore the beggar outside its gate.
The Great Divide: Religion vs. Humanity
In a country that boasts of religious unity, we’re ironically divided more than ever.
- Hindus vs. Muslims. Sikhs vs. Christians. Dalits vs. Upper Castes. Shia vs. Sunni.
Even within the same religion, different sects can’t agree on what’s holy and what’s heresy. We throw stones at each other over which god is supreme—while conveniently forgetting what every god ever preached: Compassion. Unity. Forgiveness. Love. - We chant “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (The world is one family) and then attack someone for eating beef.
- We celebrate Guru Nanak’s words on equality, then turn away lower castes from the same gurudwara kitchen.
- We quote Prophet Muhammad’s teachings of peace, then burn buses over a Facebook post.
India’s Caste Cancer: Even Gods Have Hierarchies Now
Let’s call out the biggest elephant in the holy room: Casteism.
We have more gods than any country, and somehow even they aren’t safe from our hierarchy. Some temples are still “reserved.” Some festivals are caste-exclusive. We say all are children of God, but treat fellow humans like dirt because of their surname. Even gods must be weeping.
Modern Rituals, Ancient Ignorance
Today, we’ve upgraded our rituals but downgraded our souls.
- Instagram stories with temple selfies ✅
- Online pujas for marriage and exams ✅
- YouTube live aartis ✅
- Helping a poor family next door ❌
- Standing up against injustice ❌
- Teaching kids to respect all faiths ❌
We flaunt our religion like a designer brand but live with zero spiritual depth. Kindness has become optional. Ego has become essential. Rituals are the new religion. Morality is the new casualty.
Political Puppeteers: Faith as a Vote Bank
Let’s not pretend the chaos is organic. Politicians have weaponized religion better than any army.
- One side screams “Ram Rajya,” while the other shouts “Jinnah’s Legacy.”
- Elections are fought not on policies but mandir vs. masjid, hijab vs. tilak, beef vs. biryani.
Meanwhile, hospitals still lack beds, schools lack toilets, and jobs vanish like ethics in a political debate.
What Our Gods Actually Taught—But We Ignored
- Krishna taught us about duty, not division.
- Jesus forgave those who crucified him—not trolled them on social media.
- Buddha gave up his kingdom to relieve human suffering—not build one in his name.
- Prophet Muhammad adopted orphans—not orphaned compassion.
- Guru Nanak served humanity—not hashtags.
If only we followed their lives instead of just their rituals, India would be heaven, not a battlefield.
Conclusion: What India Needs Isn’t Another Temple. It Needs a Mirror.
We’ve become a country that worships the gods, but kills the godliness. We spend hours cleaning idols but ignore the dirt in our hearts. We’ve mastered the art of looking religious—without being spiritual.
India doesn’t need more gods. It needs more goodness.
Maybe the next time we bow our heads, we should ask ourselves:
When was the last time I helped a human instead of arguing for a god?
Let this be the real prayer of modern India:
More kindness. Less caste. More compassion. Less conflict. More godliness. Fewer gods.
