📍 What’s Happening in Bengaluru Right Now?

Between May 18th and 20th, 2025, Bengaluru faced one of its worst flooding episodes in recent years. More than 130 mm of rain lashed parts of the city in just 12 hours. What followed wasn’t just water on the roads — it was an urban disaster.

  • Tech corridors like Koramangala, HSR Layout, BTM Layout, Bellandur, Sarjapur Road, and Marathahalli turned into lakes.
  • Roads disappeared underwater.
  • Vehicles were seen floating or abandoned.
  • Gated apartments were submerged.
  • People used Ola boats and even tractors to evacuate from “Lakeview” apartments — not named metaphorically, but literally built on filled-up lakes.

Even posh areas like Whitefield and Yemalur, which house tech parks, corporate offices, and luxury villas, were submerged under waist-deep water. People stranded inside their homes had to be rescued in makeshift rafts. IT workers couldn’t reach offices. Children were stuck in schools. Power outages, internet failures, and sewage overflows turned Bengaluru into a living nightmare.


😡 Who’s Responsible?

Let’s be honest — everyone is pointing fingers, but the truth is a messy mix:

🏛️ BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike)

  • Poor drainage planning.
  • Zero enforcement of encroachment removal.
  • Corrupt approvals given for construction over stormwater drains and lakebeds.

🏢 State Government

  • The Karnataka Chief Minister and Deputy CM gave dismissive responses saying “minor incidents” occurred.
  • No clear emergency response.
  • Funds allocated over the years for stormwater drains either disappeared or remained unused.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 The People & Builders

  • Builders constructed luxurious apartments on lakebeds, encroaching on nature.
  • Buyers, without verifying legality, bought these homes as “safe investments.”
  • Real estate greed and consumer ignorance both played roles.

🛑 Encroachment Example

Bellandur Lake, once one of the largest lakes in Bengaluru, has been severely encroached. Apartment complexes, tech parks, and malls now stand where nature once managed floodwater. This is not an isolated case. Dozens of lakes were filled with mud, sand, and debris — and sold off as “prime property.”


💀 The Human Cost

  • At least 5 people have died in the last three days — due to wall collapses, electric shocks, and drowning in underpasses.
  • Over 500 houses were submerged, displacing families.
  • Thousands of people are suffering silently in waterlogged streets and homes.
  • Emergency medical help couldn’t reach several areas due to blocked roads.

This isn’t just water — it’s sewage, filth, diseases, and danger flowing into people’s living rooms.


⚠️ Weather Alert: Not Over Yet

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert till Thursday, May 23rd. More rains are expected. That means:

  • Flooded areas won’t dry soon.
  • More damage may occur.
  • Public should avoid underpasses, basement parkings, and low-lying zones.

  • Apartment residents walking in waist-deep water with kids on their shoulders.
  • Cars fully submerged and floating.
  • Boats and JCB tractors used for rescue in Whitefield and Yemalur.
  • Massive traffic jams on Outer Ring Road with water gushing onto vehicles.
  • People posting videos from balconies with captions like “Living in Venice, paying Bangalore rent.”

🔎 Deeper Problem: Is This the New Normal?

Yes. And it will only get worse.

  • Climate change is making rainfall more intense and unpredictable.
  • Uncontrolled urbanization has destroyed Bengaluru’s natural drainage system — lakes, canals, and open land that absorbed water are gone.
  • Government denial and lack of accountability ensure these disasters keep repeating every year.

What’s shocking is this is not the first time. Bengaluru flooded in 2022, 2023, 2024 — and now 2025. The government’s response each time? Blame the rain. But the real flood is one of corruption, negligence, and greed.

People continue to buy ₹2 crore apartments on marshland, hoping for resale value. But nature doesn’t care about your investment — it reclaims what’s hers. Every buyer must demand:

  • Legal documents proving the land wasn’t once a lake.
  • Occupancy and completion certificates.
  • Proximity to stormwater drains or encroached lands.

If not, you’re not buying a home — you’re renting a future disaster.

Bengaluru doesn’t just need rainwater solutions. It needs honest governance, smart urban planning, and a wake-up call to its citizens. Without it, India’s so-called “Silicon Valley” will keep turning into a sinking swamp year after year.
