Do IITs and IIMs Actually Prepare You for Real Life?

- - Advice

When someone cracks the IIT-JEE or CAT and gets into an IIT or IIM, they’re immediately hailed as a genius — a future CEO, innovator, or leader. Parents celebrate. Society applauds. LinkedIn lights up with inspiration posts.

But here’s the big question:
👉 Do these prestigious institutes actually prepare students for real life?

Let’s look beyond the brand tag, beyond the packages, and into what life really demands — and whether these institutions equip students for it.

🧠 The Hype is Real — So Are the Results

To be fair, IITs and IIMs produce some of India’s brightest minds. From Satya Nadella (Microsoft) to Raghuram Rajan (former RBI Governor), many alumni have made a global impact. They’ve built unicorns, led Fortune 500 companies, and shaped policies.

These institutes offer:

  • World-class faculty
  • Tough competition
  • A powerful alumni network
  • Great placement opportunities

But… does that equal preparation for real life?

📚 Academic Excellence ≠ Life Skills

1. The Curriculum is Rigid & Theoretical

Most IITs and IIMs still follow a heavily theory-based, exam-driven approach. Real life, on the other hand, doesn’t give you a syllabus or a structured exam.

Do students learn:

  • How to manage emotional breakdowns?
  • How to handle failure or rejection?
  • How to build relationships and lead with empathy?

Rarely.

2. Soft Skills Are Underdeveloped

Communication, emotional intelligence, financial literacy, conflict resolution — these aren’t taught in classrooms. But in real life, they matter more than equations and case studies.

A top IIM grad may ace a boardroom presentation, but may still:

  • Struggle in personal relationships
  • Mismanage finances
  • Burn out from work stress

Why? Because IQ ≠ EQ.

3. Job-Ready, Not Life-Ready

Placements are the holy grail. Students train like athletes to crack interviews. But the focus is largely on:

  • Resume building
  • Cracking aptitude tests
  • Impressing recruiters

There’s little emphasis on entrepreneurial risk, ethical dilemmas, or failure — all of which define real life outside a campus.

💣 Real-Life Examples: When IITs and IIMs Weren’t Enough

Let’s dive into some real-world stories that prove:
a top-tier degree doesn’t guarantee real-life success — or immunity from failure.

🔻 Arunabh Kumar – IIT Kharagpur (Founder, TVF)

Arunabh built The Viral Fever (TVF) into India’s first major YouTube content studio. But in 2017, multiple allegations of sexual harassment led to his resignation.

Despite being a brilliant IIT graduate and a creative entrepreneur, his lack of personal boundaries and leadership ethics led to a public downfall.

👉 Lesson: Emotional maturity and respect for people matter more than academic pedigree.

🔻 Ankit Bhati – IIT Bombay (Co-founder, Ola Cabs)

Ankit, Ola’s tech co-founder, helped scale the startup to global levels. But internal conflicts led to a complete fallout with co-founder Bhavish Aggarwal, and Bhati quietly exited the firm.

👉 Lesson: Relationship management and adaptability are as critical as technical skill.

🔻 Ashneer Grover – IIM Ahmedabad (Co-founder, BharatPe)

After skyrocketing to fame on Shark Tank India, Ashneer was removed from BharatPe following allegations of financial misconduct and toxic behavior. Despite his sharp business acumen, his attitude and actions led to a dramatic public exit.

👉 Lesson: Real-life success is built on character, not just credentials.

🔻 Rashmi Bansal – IIM Ahmedabad (Author, Entrepreneur)

A bestselling author who tried to revolutionize book publishing with her startup Bloody Good Book, but the venture didn’t scale and eventually shut down.

👉 Lesson: Business isn’t just about vision. It’s about timing, execution, and resilience — things no degree alone can teach.

🔻 Bhavdeep Singh – IIM Alumni (Ex-CEO, Fortis Healthcare)

Under his leadership, Fortis was embroiled in ethical and financial controversies. He stepped down amidst intense scrutiny and stakeholder criticism.

👉 Lesson: Ethics and accountability are the real “subjects” of life.

🔻 Founders Who Hire IIT/IIM Grads Without Being One

  • Kunal Shah (CRED) – Philosophy dropout employing top grads
  • Ritesh Agarwal (OYO) – College dropout with a billion-dollar valuation

👉 Lesson: Vision, hustle, and leadership don’t need an elite badge.

💔 The Pressure to Perform = Mental Health Crisis

Let’s address the elephant in the room — mental health.

The obsession with performance, grades, and placements has created an environment of constant stress. Suicides, breakdowns, and depression are alarmingly common.

Real life success isn’t about topping exams — it’s about navigating failure, uncertainty, and chaos. And sadly, most elite institutions are still catching up on that front.

🌱 So What’s the Fix?

To truly prepare students for real life, IITs and IIMs (and all institutions) need to:

  • Redesign curriculum to include life skills and emotional training
  • Encourage failure as a learning tool, not a weakness
  • Incorporate real-world internships, not just brand-name placements
  • Create safe spaces for conversations on mental health and burnout
  • Foster community values, ethics, and social responsibility

✅ Final Thoughts

IITs and IIMs are undoubtedly national treasures. They open doors, build confidence, and create legends. But they are not the final stamp of real-world readiness.

Because real life doesn’t care about your rank. It cares about:

  • How you bounce back from failure
  • How well you connect with people
  • How honestly you navigate moral dilemmas
  • How much you’re willing to learn, unlearn, and grow

So yes — IITs and IIMs give you a head start, but real life?
That’s a whole different exam — and it has no coaching classes.
