Why Handlooom.com Does Not Follow the Traditional Handloom Retail Model
A Different Way of Buying Handloom — Built Around the Customer, Not Excess Inventory
Handlooom.com, a brand of DMZ International Imports & Exports Pvt. Ltd. and associated with the Save Handloom Foundation, operates on a different business model from conventional fashion and handloom retailers.
We do not believe that handloom should follow the traditional retail cycle of produce in bulk → stock in warehouses → sell → discount heavily → clear the remaining inventory.
Instead, we follow a more decentralized and demand-driven model.
Three Ways We Offer Products
Our products broadly fall into three categories:
1. Ready-to-Ship Products
Some products are already made and available for immediate dispatch.
2. Made-to-Order Products
The product is created after you place an order. This allows us to produce closer to actual demand rather than maintaining large inventories.
3. Customised Products
This is one of our strongest differentiators. You can select the design, fabric or raw material, colour/dye, finishing and, where applicable, your measurements and stitching requirements. We then create the product according to your requirements.
Why Don’t We Maintain Huge Stocks?
Handloom is fundamentally different from mass-produced fashion.
A large inventory means producing products without knowing who will eventually buy them. When products remain unsold, conventional retailers may eventually resort to clearance sales and discounts of 50%, 60% or even 70%.
We deliberately avoid building our business around this model.
Imagine purchasing a product today at its full price and seeing the same product heavily discounted a few months later simply because the retailer has excess stock. It can make the original customer feel that they paid a premium unnecessarily.
At Handlooom.com, our objective is different.
We would rather make a product because someone wants it than make hundreds of products hoping someone will eventually buy them.
Fixed Pricing Instead of Artificial Discounts
Our pricing is intended to reflect the actual product, materials, craftsmanship and production involved.
We are not interested in creating artificially high prices and then repeatedly offering massive discounts to clear old inventory.
The idea is simple:
Fair price. Actual product. No unnecessary stock. No artificial clearance cycle.
A Decentralized Artisan Network
Handlooom.com is not built around one massive centralized factory producing everything.
We work with a decentralized network of artisans and handloom producers. This allows different products and requirements to be handled by the people and production units best suited for them.
This model also allows us to offer something that conventional mass production struggles with:
customization.
When you tell us what you want, the requirement can be communicated to the relevant artisan or production partner instead of forcing you to choose only from whatever happens to be sitting in a warehouse.
Your Measurements. Your Product.
Apparel is another area where our model makes a significant difference.
Instead of buying a standard size and hoping it fits perfectly, customers can provide their measurements for made-to-order apparel.
The garment can then be stitched according to the requirements provided at the time of ordering.
This can also reduce one of the biggest problems associated with online fashion:
buying a product, discovering that the fit is wrong, and sending it back.
Our objective is to move the process closer to:
You specify → We make → We deliver.
Even Sarees Can Be Customised
Our customization model is not limited to apparel.
We can also work on customized saree requirements.
For example, if a family, organisation, group or institution requires 25, 50 or more sarees for a function, celebration, uniform requirement or special occasion, the sarees can be developed according to the required specifications.
Design, colour, fabric, weave and other requirements can be discussed before production.
For larger quantities, customization can also make the overall economics more practical than purchasing individually from conventional retail channels.
Made for India and the World
Once the requirements are finalized, the product can be produced and delivered to customers in India as well as internationally.
This means the customer does not necessarily have to find an already-produced product sitting in a warehouse.
Instead, the process can begin with an idea, requirement or specification.
That is what makes our model different.
We Are Not Trying to Become Another Fast-Fashion Store
The objective of Handlooom.com is not to fill warehouses with thousands of products and then spend the next season trying to liquidate them.
We want to build a model where:
Demand creates production.
Customers influence the product.
Artisans remain part of the value chain.
Inventory remains controlled.
Pricing remains transparent.
And handloom remains about craftsmanship rather than clearance sales.
Handlooom.com is therefore not simply another online handloom store.
It is an attempt to create a more demand-driven, decentralized and customizable way of buying handloom products.
Because when something is made specifically for you, there is little reason for it to become yesterday’s stock tomorrow.
Handlooom.com — Handloom, made closer to the person who wants it.
